Sarum Lectionary Corrected

This page will be devoted to the Sarum Lectionary as corrected, as necessary, by the scholarship of the council of Trent, which attempted to set right the dislocation of collects and readings.

1. The First Sunday in Advent

This First Sunday of Advent or the Fourth Before Christmas is the first day of the liturgical year. The Mass prepares us this day for the double coming (adventus) of mercy and justice. That is why St. Paul tells us, in the Epistle, to cast off sin in order that, being ready for the coming of Christ as our Savior, we may also be ready for His coming as our Judge, of which we learn in the Gospel. Let us prepare ourselves, by pious aspirations and by the reformation of our life, for this twofold coming. Jesus Our Lord will reward those who yearn for Him and await Him: "Those who trust in Him shall not be confounded."

Introit
Ps. xxv. Ad te levavi.

UNTO thee, O LORD, will I lift up my soul; my God, I have put my trust in thee: O let me not be confounded, neither let mine enemies triumph over me. For all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed.

Ps. 25. Show me thy ways, O LORD, and teach me thy paths.

UNTO thee, O LORD, etc.

℣ Glory be to the Father etc.

UNTO thee, O LORD, etc.

The Collect

O LORD, raise up, we pray thee, thy power, and come among us, and with great might succour us; that whereas, through our sins and wickedness, we are sore let and hindered in running the race that is set before us, thy bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us; through the satisfaction of thy Son our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be honour and glory, world with out end. Amen.

The Epistle
Romans xiii. 11-14.

AND that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Gradual
Ps. xxv.

For all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed, O Lord.

℣ Show me thy ways, O LORD, and teach me thy paths.

For all they etc.

Alleluia
Ps. lxxxv.

Show us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation.

The Gospel
Luke xxi. 25-33.

AND there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees; when they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Offertory
Ps. xxv.

UNTO thee, O LORD, will I lift up my soul; my God, I have put my trust in thee: O let me not be confounded, neither let mine enemies triumph over me. For all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed.

℣ Lead me forth in thy truth, and learn me: for thou art the God of my salvation; in thee hath been my hope all the day long.

℣ Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me, O Lord.; O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be confounded, for I have put my trust in thee.

Communion
Ps. lxxxv.

Yea, the LORD shall show loving-kindness; and our land shall give her increase.

Proper Preface: of Advent

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: Through Jesus Christ our Lord: for in thy mercy and fidelity thou hast promised him as Saviour to the lost human race, to instruct the ignorant with his truth, justify the wicked with His holiness, and help the weak by his power. Now that the time draweth near for the coming of him whom thou sendest and the day of our liberation is dawning with faith in thy promises, we rejoice with holy exultation. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying:

Post-communion Collect

GRANT to us, O Lord, we beseech thee: so to wait for thy loving kindness in the midst of thy Temple, that in readiness of heart and mind we may hail the coming feast of our redemption. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

2. The Second Sunday of Advent

Numerous allusions appear in the Liturgy of this day to Jerusalem and her people. Let us be filled with sentiments of hope and joy, for the coming of Jesus is nigh. Let us prepare the way in our hearts for the Messias: Our Lord and Redeemer Jesus Christ.

Introit
Is. xxx.: Populus Sion.

O PEOPLE of Sion, behold, the Lord is nigh at hand to redeem the nations: and in the gladness of your heart the Lord shall cause his glorious voice to be heard.

Ps. 80. Hear, O thou Shepherd of Israel: thou that leadest Joseph like a sheep.

O PEOPLE of Sion etc.

℣ Glory be to the Father etc.

O PEOPLE of Sion etc.

The Collect

O LORD Jesus Christ, who at thy first coming didst send thy messenger to prepare thy way before thee; Grant that the ministers and stewards of thy mysteries may likewise so prepare and make ready thy way, by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, that at thy second coming to judge the world we may be found an acceptable people in thy sight, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Epistle
Romans xv. 4-13.

WHATSOEVER things were written afore time were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like-minded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: that ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people. And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; In him shall the Gentiles trust. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Gradual
Ps. l.

Out of Sion hath God appeared: in perfect beauty.

℣ Gather my saints together unto me: those that have made a covenant with me with sacrifice.

Out of Sion etc.

Alleluia
Ps. cxxii.

I was glad when they said unto me: we will go into the house of the Lord.

The Gospel
Matthew xi. 2-10.

NOW when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he whoso-ever shall not be offended in me. And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

Offertory
Ps. lxxxv.

Wilt thou not turn again, O God, and quicken us, that thy people may rejoice in thee: shew us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation.

℣ LORD, thou art become gracious unto thy land; thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacob. Thou hast forgiven the offence of thy people.

Mercy and truth are met together: Truth shall flourish out of the earth, and righteousness hath looked down from heaven.

Communion
Baruch v. 5.

Arise, O Jerusalem, and stand on high, and behold the joy that cometh to thee from Thy God.

Post-communion Collect

O LORD, who hast vouchsafed to satisfy us with heavenly sustenance: we humbly beseech thee; that we, who thou hast made partakers of thy holy mysteries, may learn therein to despise all things earthly, and to cleave stedfastly unto all things heavenly. [Through]
